Day 26 Tesla Ruby Tryon Palace Road Trip Part 2

Don and I had a very fun and informative day touring Tryon Palace and the surrounding historical buildings and museum. I would recommend this outing for adults and families. The museum area in particular has activities that children will love.

We learned that Tryon Palace was built between 1767 and 1770. It was used by royal governor William Tryon for really only a short period of time. The palace was used for many purposes and in the end the storing of hay in the cellar caused it to burn down in 1798. The stables and kitchen out building survived, but only the foundation of the palace itself remained. At one point, Hwy. 70 went over top of the site and out to the waterfront. It took the work of Maude Moore Lathem, and other women active in the community at the time, to start serious restoration efforts in 1944. The work was completed in 1959, but unfortunately, Ms. Lathem passed in 1951. The gardens at the Palace have a dedication to her. John Hawks was the original architect, and his drawings were used during the reconstruction. The historical society has worked hard to ensure that the "new" Tryon Palace is as authentic as possible.

As far as driving goes, we had no problems. We charged to 100% before leaving. The drive over on Hwy. 70 was easy, and Don used Autopilot quite a bit. We stopped at a rest area to use the facilities even though the car didn't need to stop:-) We arrived with 60% of our battery capacity remaining which is what the car had predicted. We traveled 118 miles to get there and used 325Wh/mile. Although strictly speaking we didn't need to SC to get back home even with a little extra driving in downtown while there, we decided to stick to our plan and travel back home through Warsaw, NC and SC while we used the facilities. We ended up at the SC for about 20 minutes and had a 174 mile range when we left. A little bit of free electricity is good. Also, the more range we arrive home with the faster we can recharge and be ready to go again the next day.

My goals with this trip were to do something fun while the boys are away, to drive a trip exceeding our range (fail), enjoy a longer drive in Ruby, and to get Don to his first SC.
