Thought of the Day #3 - Dirty Coal Ash Secrets

Coal Ash, a by product of coal burning power plants, has been in the news a lot in NC in the past few years. There was a spill into the Dan River, and there is the potential for arsenic and other toxins leaking from coal ash basins into local ground water. However, despite the creation of plenty of coal ash right here in the state, apparently it is cheaper for some companies to buy coal ash from India, Poland and/or China and bring it in to make cement than it is for Duke power to turn what it produces into a form usable for cement. That's right, with all the coal ash we already have, we are buying even more including expanding ports/opening a warehouse for it in Morehead City. The NC legislature is working to make Duke provide it's coal ash in a usable form to cement plants to better dispose of it's coal ash expensive or not. Don touches on this hot issue. The irony of it all.
