Day 87 Tesla Ruby Meets Nuclear Energy

I was up earlier than I wanted for a Saturday. Joey and I had our first Tae Kwon Do black belt pretest. Thankfully, we passed! No rest for us, though. Monday at 5pm we start learning more forms for another pretest in 2 weeks.

After getting some breakfast and freshening up, we went to Shearon Harris Community Day. Shearon Harris in a nuclear power plant about 10 miles from our home in Fuquay. Once a year, they open up the control room training center simulator. That means you get to see what nuclear power operators do to monitor the status of the various systems involved in making nuclear power.

Every 18 months, they do a scheduled shut down to refuel. They remove the spent fuel rods and put in new ones. That process takes 2-3 weeks. The spent rods are currently stored on site. Because this plant was originally designed to run 4 reactors and only has one, there is plenty of storage space.

This reactor came online in 1987, so they are celebrating 30 years of safe operations.

We enjoyed the various exhibits reviewing the history of the plant, emergency procedures for evacuation of nearby residents, the corn snake;-), and of course the free ice cream.

Best of all, Johnny got to go up in the bucket truck this year. That was awesome! We met another family waiting for a ride, and they took an interest in Ruby. For the first time, I did the Christmas Easter egg show. Would have been better at night, but it was still cool.
