Yesterday was the NC FLL State Championship. I took one of our two school teams, The 8-Brick Men, #42336 to the tournament. Johnny and I had the chance to go to the State Championship several years ago when he was in elementary school, but this was our first time going at his new school, WYMLA.
The day started off too early with a 90 minute 80+ mile drive. We got to Greensboro NC A&T around 7:15am. The morning consisted of robot tournament table practice runs and 3 judging sessions: Robot Design, Core Values, and Project. Coaches aren't allowed into the judging sessions, and I don't have the rubrics yet for review, but I am sure they did good.
In the afternoon, the team did 3 tournament robot runs and scored 315 on all 3. They received one precision token, aka penalty, on each run but for different reasons each time. They had so hoped to have one clean run, but still, they did excellent. They had such awesome consistency. They can certainly be proud about the robot runs especially since they modified the code to fix a return to home issue after attempting the crane mission and also added a small part to the robot to make the crane mission more likely to proceed.
We were a tad sad at the end of the day that we did not receive a lego award for one of the judge assigned awards, but that's OK. We'll up our game even more next year. We finished 31 out of 60 on robot scoring. The high robot score was 490.
Om the Tesla side, Don drove over 334 miles yesterday. and it cost us around $11. That figures electricity at 8 cents a KWh. It would have cost about $31 to drive a gas-powered car at 25mph and $2.30 a gallon. That's about a $20 savings. And of course we enjoyed the drive more making use of Autopilot and having a quieter, less smelly ride.
